Why I replaced WordPress with Astro and AI
After fifteen years on WordPress, maintenance overhead was slowing down client builds. Here is why Struxr moved to static code and AI.
I built client websites on WordPress starting in 2009. For over a decade, it was the sensible default for small businesses: it gave clients an admin dashboard, while plugins handled forms, SEO, and commerce.
Over time, that convenience turned into maintenance overhead.
A standard WordPress site today carries dozens of third-party plugins, each maintained by a different vendor. Core updates break plugins. Plugins introduce security vulnerabilities. Page speed degrades under database queries, caching layers, and visual page builders. Managing twenty client sites meant spending twenty hours each month testing plugin updates.
When AI code generation matured, the economics shifted.
Agencies historically relied on WordPress because building custom software from scratch was too labor-intensive for small business budgets. WordPress gave you an instant backend, but at the cost of technical debt.
Today, I use modern AI workflows to build static frontends in Astro and custom web applications in Rails. I get direct control over every line of HTML and database logic in a fraction of the time it used to take to configure and debug a WordPress theme.
The benefits for our clients are immediate:
- Page load speeds drop to milliseconds because pages are server-rendered HTML rather than heavy database lookups.
- Security vulnerabilities drop because there are no plugin backdoors or unpatched dashboard panels exposed to the public internet.
- Hosting costs drop from expensive managed WordPress servers to lightweight static hosting that costs pennies.
We didn’t switch because of marketing hype. We switched because clean, custom code is now faster to build and far cheaper to maintain than managing legacy software.
